Moving Youll Love It When Your Plan Comes Together
A good moving plan involves solid pre planning and setting three important dates a day for packing, a day for loading and a day for delivery. These four things form a solid framework for your moving experience to be either good or bad. This article is about the first element, pre-planning.
The task of moving is not something that most of us would look forward to. Moving can be stressful, and problematic to say the least. But some careful planning can help make the job of moving a lot easier. Many people think that moving themselves is a good way to save money. Most find that the frustration and aggravation, work and time involved is not worth the savings. This article assumes that you're going to make it easy on your friends and on yourself and hire a professional. Even if you do hire professional there are still things that you can do to make your move goes smoothly.
Start by contacting the telephone company and the utility company is about their disconnection policies well in advance of your move date. It can save you money and avoid surprises too. It's a good idea to arrange to have the telephone service disconnected the day after you are scheduled for load although having a working cell phone would be just as good.
Since we're talking about communications, it might be a good idea to set up a connection date for your new telephone service and other utilities so that they are connected a day after you arrive. Many utility companies have crowded schedules and advance scheduling will get you connected in a timely manner.
By working with your mover, you can usually schedule the load day and the delivery date to fit your schedule. You will want to do this so that you can schedule yourself to be at the location during the loading and delivering process. This is the policy of a lot of movers and it's also a good protection safeguard for you.
Speaking of safeguards before the packing and loading begins you will want to take all of your small valuable items like jewelry, cash etc. and put them in a safe secure place. Items such as these are rarely covered by any movers contract. There's a lot of things going on during packing and moving days and you don't need to be worried about these possessions.
It's also recommended that you pack sentimental items like photograph albums and family videos etc. and take them with you. They may not have a high dollar value but they are priceless to you.
When scheduling your moving days you want to avoid peak times if possible. These peak times are the first few days of the month in the last few days of the month especially during the summer and the holidays of Thanksgiving Christmas and New Year's. These are the days in which it seems everybody wants to move and can sometimes cost you a lot more.
A few other preplanning suggestions would be to make your arrangements for your trip to your new home such as hotels airline reservations etc. in advance to avoid surprises. You may want to have a yard sale or a moving sale for the items that you don't want to take with you or you may want to donate these items to charity organizations. If you do donate items make sure that you get a receipt for your tax records. Speaking of taxes be sure to arrange with your employer to forward your tax withholding forms to your new location.
Another tip that can be helpful if you have children is to arrange in advance to send transcripts and school records to the new schools. You may also want to gather personal records such as medical dental school birth that dismal marriage etc. to be taken with you also. It's a lot easier to get these records while you're in town then to try and do so from a distance. You may also want to close out local department store charge cards that she won't be using anymore.
We've been talking a lot about the things you shouldn't do hear some things that you should discontinue. Discontinue your newspaper delivery, garbage collection, Lon Poole service, diaper service, fuel and all delivery, order service, and water softener service. Schedule the cut off date for the gas serviceman like just the service be sure to ask for a refund if one is due. And leave them with a forwarding address.
Some other people that you may want to notify that you are moving and change addresses with our of course the post office, Social Security office, insurance companies, credit card companies, magazines, and friends and relatives.
