Hey i'm just wandering what everyone's views are on Elliott Smith and if anyone has any favourite songs or albums and why?
I am a huge Elliott Smith fan. He is my favorite singer/songwriter type of musician. He just has this balance of blunt and beautiful that really grabs me, packaged together with a brilliant gift of melody (and harmony for that matter) and very interesting songs on the guitar side. Some of my favorite songs are Tomorrow, Tomorrow; Independence Day; Condor Avenue; Junk Bond Trader; Can't Make A Sound; Better Be Quiet Now; Christian Brothers; Rose Parade; Southern Belle; The Enemy is You; A Passing Feeling; Cupid's Trick. If I had to pick just one track I would probably say Condor Avenue. It's just a great song, really sad lyrics, really pretty tune. Although if you asked me again in a couple hours I may very well give you a different answer.
I'd probably say my favorite record is XO. It is the saddest record I've ever heard. There are a couple of light points, but if you get into the lyrics of them it is usually biting and bitter or deceptively sad. The last song, I Didn't Understand, is a just haunting accapella tune that I proclaim as the saddest song I've ever heard. Just the way he closes out with "You talked to me about love and you painted pictures of a never never land. And I could've gone to that place but I didn't understand, I didn't Understand, I didn't understand." Just kills me, and the record goes out like that. Like I said, so haunting and beautiful. That record is my favorite, but they're all must haves in my opinion though. XO is just put together so well though, amazing record.
In case you're asking in reference to shis suicide, obviously it makes me really sad. From what I've heard both in rumours and his music and from what I've seen (his very unhealthy appearance towards the end) it seems like it was a really tough ride for him. I'd like to say that there's always a better way and he shouldn't have gone out like that, but I can't claim to understand what it feels like to really want to get clean and not be able to.
I bought the new record (collection of old recordings) and I'm really enjoying it. From what I've heard it spans from like 92-96 or so. I really hope that means there will be another that spans the rest of his career. There is a particularly great song I saw him play at the palace in Los Angeles called "Just Between Us" that was rumoured to be on his last record (was listed on the preliminary track listing before he was dropped by Dreamworks (I'm pretty sure it was dreamworks)) but apparently didn't make the cut.
I am a huge fan of Elliott Smith and highly recomend him to anyone who likes folk or "indie" rock music. If you're into Elliott Smith you may not know about Heatmiser. It was a rock band he was in that was pretty good. They released a great record (Mic City Sons) and a pretty good one (Cop and Speeder) and the rest of it wasn't that great. For warning, Mic City Sons fits in pretty well with the Elliott Smith catelogue, but Cop and Speeder is something a little different. I like it, but it took a while to grow on me.
