The Oldest Pop Festival in the World
Pinkpop was first being held in the southern Dutch city of Geleen in 1970. Originally organising this music festival's first edition aimed to offer an alternative for Melanie's cancelled performance, who was a very popular singer that time. The organisation consisted out of several enthusiast music fans. Keef Hartley was the only foreign musician. All other bands that performed in 1970 were Dutch, from which The Golden Earring was the most known act. About 10,000 young music fans visited the first Pinkpop Festival.
After this first successful edition the authorities gave the green light to organise Pinkpop 1971, which did draw 20,000 visitors. Mungo Jerry and Roger Chapman were this edition's top acts.
By now Pinkpop's organisation started to become professional, while with each next edition of the festival the number of visitors significantly increased. For the first time sold out, 40,000 spectators passed the entry gates in 1976 and witnessed live performances of international acts such as Little Feat, The Outlaws and Uriah Heep, which headlined this edition.
A new record of 50,000 visitors attended Pinkpop 1979. The Pinkpop Festival had become popular with international groups as well and several of the acts in 1979 included Dire Straits, The Police, Rush and Elvis Costello & the Attractions, who later all became world-famous.
Pinkpop 1979 was probably one of the most legendary editions, as Mick Jagger was one of the visitors. Peter Tosh headlined the festival and the audience waited in vain for Jagger's duet with Tosh, performing the international hit "Don't Look Back." At the last moment the drunken Rolling Stone refused to join Peter Tosh and his band on stage.
It was during this period of time that Thanx.nl offered the first official Pinkpop shirts at the festival, which throughout the following years became some of the most popular souvenirs with visitors. Due to their legendary Pinkpop performances, bands such as UB40, U2, Dire Straits and The Police gained worldwide attention.
In 1987 Pinkpop definitely moved from Geleen to the town of Landgraaf, located as well in the southern part of Holland. Today, the annual Pinkpop Festival is a three-day event drawing more than 60,000 fans that come from all over Europe.
