As we advance into the modern ages, hand tools and equipment for traditional manual professions tend to become replaced or prioritized by electrical or battery run alternatives; in hairdressing this is no different. Hair clippers have become (although not a replacement) the new scissors and comb, which not only provide you with more speed and accuracy but allows you even greater control and precision in your creativity. Hair clippers are renowned for their use in the most ultra modern hair creations and as standard is definitely part of the hairstylists essential kit.
These tools at one time used to be only available to professional users, where as now they are widely available to the general public. This is something I applaud as this has opened the door of the world of hairdressing to the budding hairstylist, allowing them sufficient practice of these tools without the previous expense involved. That being said, “A Person Is Only As Good As Their Tools”. A statement, which definitely needs to be considered, if you are looking to become a professional hairstylist.
When purchasing your essential kit, there are a few things you should consider before purchasing, as your hair clippers will become the extension of your hand and needs to perform your magic. The ergonomics of your purchase is of paramount importance. It must fit well in your hand and be comfortable to use over long hours. Hairdressing involves cutting wet and dry hair, depending on the style or looks desired and should be designed for that purpose. Hair has many textures so your hair clipper should be made suitable for all hair types.
Another consideration is your blade adjustment levels, they need to adjust sufficiently for close cutting, scalp and nape contouring. As hairstylists tend to cut more than one person’s hair in a day, the motor of the hair clippers should be heavy duty and be able to withstand long hours. Some of the cheaper models tend to become more noisy the longer they are left on and some become extremely hot and almost unbearable to use.
Blade type is also an important factor; there are 3 main types of blade, standard metal, ceramic and titanium. Of the three, ceramic and titanium are the better buy, with the titanium being the best buy. Consider the low maintenance of your hair clippers and your blades sharpness as this will benefit you later on.
A good quality hair clipper no matter how expensive initially, will undoubtedly prove to be the wiser choice long term and should be able to pay for itself in no time. Buy the best you can afford initially and upgrade as soon as you can afford to do so. Your hair clippers are part of your essential kit. Having all the criteria above can only make for a sound investment.
