Records Supply
You never know where things will go in actual reality, but one thing we do know about records and that is that the supply is created. There will be no more records put together or produced. (When I say records for this post, I'm speaking of vinyl records. Sure, the word has come to be slang for music albums whether they're CD or only digital and distributed solely through the various online media.) So, the supply of records is what it is. And with age and deterioration, that supply of records is diminishing. As it diminishes, I expect prices to rise. People always seem to want what they cannot have.....or what is more difficult to obtain, right?!
Records You Like
When it comes to your own personal collection, I strongly recommend that you collect records that you like. I know this sounds oh so logical. But you'd be surprised.
Why amass a big group of anything that you don't really care for? Hopefully, with your records you're going to have some enjoyment of them along the way. If you're into the Motown sound, then collect some Motown vinyl records. And play them every once in a while.
But don't just stick to the tried and true. Branch out a bit and put you toe in the water. Try to find a really old Motown record for instance. Or expand your acquisitions into a different genre like jazz or reggae. One of the reasons I share this is to help you stay out of a rut. If you get bored then it is unlikely that you'll stay active and involved with your record collecting. To amass a truly valuable collection takes work and plenty of it. You need to give it your regular attention.
Opportunities with Records
I want to pursue two diverse paths here. There are opportunities that might come to you regarding collecting records that you might not be expecting. Let's say someone approaches you out of the blue that has learned somehow of your record collection prowess. And let's say that they have a strong desire to add your collection to their own. And let's say that they offer you a ridiculously large sum of money for your collection. Do you sell or not?
Here is where I want to encourage you to know why you're collecting records in the first place. Begin with the end in mind, they say! Are you collecting all those records for your own pure enjoyment? Or are you record collecting to make some money? Either is perfectly fine. Just know what you're in it for starting out and your life will be a whole lot easier down the road.
Another tact on this topic is opportunities on where to find records. Internet! Internet! Internet! The world wide web has revolutionized our search for just about everything and records is no exception. Use the Internet to educate yourself and find what it is you're looking for. It's an opportunity you don't want to miss.
